FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Iron Chef Michael Symon to Host Garlic Showdown at 2018 Gilroy Garlic Festival
May 1, 2018 (Gilroy, CA): Over the last 40 years, the Gilroy Garlic Festival has welcomed many famous chefs to the Garlic Cook-Off Stage, but has never hosted a true Iron Chef—until now. Festival organizers announced that Iron Chef Michael Symon will appear at the 40th annual Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday, July 29, 2018.
At high noon on Sunday, July 29, Michael Symon will emcee the Garlic Showdown on the Garlic Cook-Off Stage. This Iron Chef-inspired competition features local professional chefs squaring off in a culinary battle for a $3,000 cash prize and ultimate bragging rights. After the winner is announced, Michael will perform a live cooking demonstration and answer questions from the audience.
Todd Trekell, 2018 Gilroy Garlic Festival President, stated, “This year the Gilroy Garlic Festival is celebrating 40 years of family fun—and we’re thrilled to welcome Michael Symon, a genuine Iron Chef, to reign supreme at our own Garlic Showdown!”
Chef Michael Symon cooks with soul. Growing up in a Greek and Sicilian family, the Cleveland native creates boldly flavored, deeply satisfying dishes at his award-winning restaurants: Lola, Mabel’s BBQ, Roast, Bar Symon and B Spot. Most recently, he opened Angeline, an Italian restaurant in Atlantic City named after his mother. Michael also shares his exuberant, approachable cooking style and infectious laugh with viewers as an Iron Chef on the Food Network and as a co-host on ABC’s The Chew.
Though this will be his first appearance at the Gilroy Garlic Festival, Michael Symon is certainly no stranger to intense cooking competitions. After gaining fame as host of The Melting Pot on Food Network, he went on to win season one of The Next Iron Chef in 2008, earning him a permanent spot on the roster of esteemed Iron Chefs. Michael continues to appear on multiple Food Network and Cooking Channel shows, including Food Feuds and his own Cooking Channel show Symon’s Suppers as well as Cook Like an Iron Chef, The Next Iron Chef, and Iron Chef America. In 2011, he joined the cast of The Chew on ABC-TV and has recently appeared in Iron Chef Showdown on Food Network.
In addition to being a world-renowned restaurateur and television chef, Michael has also published a number of best-selling cookbooks, including Michael Symon’s Live to Cook (2009), Carnivore (2012), 5 in 5 (2013), and 5 in 5 For Every Season (2013). He recently released his latest book, Playing with Fire.
The Garlic Showdown and other Garlic Cook-Off Stage events are sponsored in part by Christopher Ranch, longtime supporters of the Gilroy Garlic Festival. Don Christopher was one of the original founders of the first Gilroy Garlic Festival in 1979, and the family-owned company continues to supply the Festival with over two tons of fresh California-grown garlic each year.
