FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Eight Aspiring Young Chefs to Battle in Garlic Chef Jr. Competition at Gilroy Garlic Festival on July 26
June 27, 2019 (Gilroy, CA): Last year’s inaugural Garlic Chef Jr. cooking competition was a huge success, so the youngsters will be back to do battle at the Gilroy Garlic Festival on Friday, July 26. Eight aspiring chefs (ages 10-15) will be preparing their own original recipes on the Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage for a prize worth $500.
Hosted by MasterChef Season 9 Winner Gerron Hurt, this exciting event will start at 2:00 pm on the Challenge Butter Cook-Off Stage. Each contestant must create an original baked or grilled dish containing at least six cloves of garlic. A panel of expert judges will evaluate each dish for taste, appearance, creativity, and use of garlic. The winner will be announced at 4:00 pm and will receive a prize valued at $500.
Two of the young chefs are seasoned veterans from last year’s contest: Kaiden Gonzelez (age 12) from Gilroy, who will prepare Bulgogi Tacos; and Lucy Fassl (age 12) from Martinez, who will make her signature Roasted Garlic, Lemon and Herb Chicken.
Another four of the contestants hail from Gilroy and will have plenty of hometown fans in the stands: Maya Torres (age 13), making Garlic Steak Quesadilla with Chimchuri and Pico de Gallo; Rayen Garcia (age 11), preparing Gilroy Garlic-Infused Empanada with Spanish Rice and Plantain Chips; Sandra Jissel Martinez (age 10), making Creamy Garlic Pastry; and Winston James (age 13), cooking up his Garlic Chicken Curry with Rice Pilaf and Garlic Raitha.
The remaining competitors from the Bay Area include Brandon Makiyama (age 11) from San Jose, making Miso Garlic Salmon with Rice Noodles and Brussels Sprouts; and Spencer Arpajian (age 15) from Portola Valley, preparing Spanish Fideau with Grilled Bread with Garlic Tomato Paste.
