Chef Carlos Pineda Wins 2018 Garlic Showdown

July 29, 2018 (Gilroy, CA): Chef Carlos Pineda from the Culinary Academy and Kneaded Bakery at Rebekah's Children's Services in Gilroy won the annual Garlic Showdown at the 2018 Gilroy Garlic Festival on Sunday, July 29. Pineda won the competition for the second year in a row.

Using the "secret ingredients" of dried prunes, fresh prunes, and fresh plums, Pineda impressed the panel of judges with two dishes: a Cornmeal-Battered Chile Relleno Stuffed with Oyster Mushrooms, Prunes and Cheese that was served with a Smoked Roasted Garlic and Chipotle Plum Sauce with Fried Fennel; and Spicy Garlic Shrimp with Fire-Roasted Corn and Plum Purée topped with Roasted Garlic and Plums Chutney.

For the first time ever, an actual Iron Chef—Michael Symon—presided over the Garlic Showdown, which was inspired by cooking competitions like Iron Chef.

Chef Carlos was awarded a $3,000 prize, which he will donate to the Rebekah Children’s Services Culinary Academy.
