Chef Josh Grimes and Chef Mark McGowan from Santa Clara University emerged as champions in the second annual Gilroy Garlic Festival Garlic Bowl. This live cooking competition pitted the Broncos against rival teams from University of California Berkeley and Fresno State University.
“We’re very proud to claim the Garlic Bowl trophy on behalf of the students, faculty and staff at Santa Clara University,” said Josh Grimes.
The chefs prepared two dishes in one hour in front of a live audience at the Gilroy Garlic Festival Cook-Off Stage. The winning dishes, selected by a panel of expert judges, were “Telicherry Peppercorn Crusted American Kobe Beef with Tempura Spring Vegetables, Truffled Asparagus and Grape Tomato Confit, and Black Garlic Puree” and “Garlic Godzilla Oshi Sushi”.
Santa Clara University also claimed $5,000 in general scholarship money. University of California Berkeley and Fresno State University each received $1,000 towards their university’s general scholarship fund.
